Reflection on Safeguarding at PS Kenya

At PS Kenya, safeguarding, also known as Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (PSEAH), is central to our mission of enhancing the health and well-being of communities throughout Kenya. Safeguarding is more than just a policy; it is a core value related to integrity that shapes how we design, implement, and evaluate our health programs. Through this commitment, we ensure that our health interventions are ethical, inclusive, and safe for the individuals and communities we strive to support.

To ensure we adhere to the highest standards, PS Kenya aligns its safeguarding practices with the requirements of major donors. These organizations emphasize safeguarding to ensure that vulnerable populations are protected and that the health programs they fund have a meaningful, positive impact. PS Kenya meets these requirements by embedding six core safeguarding principles into our work as outlined below

To ensure we adhere to the highest standards, PS Kenya aligns its safeguarding practices with the requirements of major development partners. These organizations emphasize safeguarding to ensure that vulnerable populations are protected and that the health programs they fund have a meaningful, positive impact. PS Kenya meets these requirements by embedding six core safeguarding principles into our work.

The six principles of safeguarding are important for the same reason that safeguarding is important: every person has the right to live free from abuse and neglect. These principles are critical to preventing abuse and neglect while also ensuring the best possible level of care. By following the key safeguarding principles, we can be sure that we are doing our best to protect vulnerable people from harm.

A key element in our safeguarding strategy is the establishment of comprehensive policies that set clear expectations for behaviour and provide mechanisms for addressing any safeguarding issues. These policies include our Code of Conduct & Ethics policy, Child Protection Policy, Anti-Trafficking (Modern Slavery) Policy, and Whistle-blower Policy as well as the organization’s HR Manual. These documents define the ethical standards to which all our staff, volunteers, and partners must adhere and create a transparent framework for addressing any breaches. One of the most critical aspects of these policies is the Whistle-blower Policy, which empowers individuals to report any unethical behaviour or safeguarding concerns without fear of retaliation. This ensures that any issues are raised promptly and addressed thoroughly, reinforcing a culture of accountability across the organization.

Our commitment to safeguarding is evident at every stage of program implementation—from the hiring process to the delivery of services on the ground. We begin with a rigorous recruitment process, including comprehensive background checks for all staff and volunteers. This helps ensure that those who represent PS Kenya uphold the highest ethical standards. Furthermore, all staff members are trained regularly in safeguarding, and refresher courses are provided to keep everyone updated on the latest safeguarding practices and risks. This ongoing education fosters a deep understanding of safeguarding and encourages staff to be vigilant in their roles.

In today’s digital world, safeguarding risks have evolved beyond physical spaces to the online environment, where individuals can be vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and harassment. PS Kenya recognizes these emerging risks, particularly those related to sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (SEAH) in the digital and social media realms. To address these concerns, we increase awareness of online safety, we help staff, beneficiaries, and partners recognize and avoid potential risks. Additionally, PS Kenya has established a data protection policy to safeguard sensitive personal information and prevent misuse.

At PS Kenya, we also recognize the importance of community engagement in safeguarding. Working closely with local communities allows us to understand their unique needs, concerns, and cultural dynamics. By involving communities in decision-making processes and program design, we ensure that our health interventions are not only effective but also culturally sensitive and inclusive. This collaboration fosters trust between PS Kenya and the communities we serve, ensuring that health programs are both safe and impactful. Safe programming by integrating Safeguarding also delve into our ESG strategy. By focusing on social responsibility, we promote inclusivity and equality, ensuring that our health interventions benefit all individuals.

PS Kenya integrates strong governance practices into our operations to ensure transparency, accountability, and ethical decision-making at every level. This governance framework enables us to meet donor expectations while adhering to the highest ethical standards in all our work.

In regions with prevalent security risks, PS Kenya employs various strategies to ensure the safety of both our staff and the communities we serve. We work closely with the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) to access comprehensive security information and assessments, ensuring we are well-informed about potential risks. Additionally, we engage the services of Partner Liaison Security Operations (PLSO), which provides security updates to staff, helping them stay prepared for any situation. We also rely on community intelligence to monitor potential threats and adapt our programs accordingly, ensuring that our operations continue in a secure environment.

At PS Kenya, safeguarding is not just about complying with external standards; it’s about fostering a culture of safety, transparency, and ethical responsibility. By integrating safeguarding principles into every stage of our program delivery, we ensure that our health initiatives meet the needs of the communities we serve while respecting and protecting everyone involved. Our commitment to safeguarding ensures that individuals, especially the most vulnerable, can participate in our health programs with confidence, knowing that their safety and dignity are our top priorities.

The importance of safeguarding today cannot be overstated. In a world where vulnerabilities are increasing and the risks of exploitation and abuse are ever-present, safeguarding is essential to ensuring our programs achieve their intended impact. By maintaining a strong focus on safeguarding, PS Kenya builds trust with communities and donors, enhancing the effectiveness and long-term sustainability of our health programs. Ultimately, safeguarding is vital for building stronger, healthier communities, allowing everyone involved in our health programs to experience positive, lasting outcomes.

In addition to training, regular program risk assessments help us identify any risks or concerns related to sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (SEAH) and make necessary adjustments to ensure the safety of participants. Our Risk and Compliance Department supports our commitment to accountability and transparency by addressing any issues promptly and effectively. This department also plays a crucial role in maintaining high ethical standards across the organization. They conduct regular ethics refreshers to ensure staff understand and remain committed to the core values of PS Kenya. Moreover, they provide clear reporting mechanisms for safeguarding concerns, ensuring that staff, beneficiaries, and external stakeholders know how to raise an issue if needed. The department also oversees investigations into any safeguarding incidents, ensuring that all concerns are addressed in a timely and thorough manner.

Safeguarding is central to the success of PS Kenya’s health programs. By aligning with donor requirements, implementing robust policies, addressing emerging risks, and incorporating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into our operations, we ensure that our programs are effective and safe for everyone involved. This commitment to safeguarding underlines our broader mission to improve the health and well-being of Kenyans, and we remain unwavering in our dedication to ethical, inclusive, and sustainable health interventions.
