Adolescents in Kenya face unique challenges when accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, challenges that, if left unaddressed, can lead to long-term health and social consequences. Recognizing this, Population Services Kenya (PS Kenya) is working in collaboration with the Tunza network facilities across multiple counties to ensure that young people receive the care, support, and information they need to thrive.
At the heart of this work is a commitment to quality assurance (QA). PS Kenya conducts regular QA assessments at Tunza facilities to ensure that services provided to adolescents meet the highest standards. These assessments verify compliance with Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines, including the presence of valid licenses for both facilities and healthcare providers, key prerequisites for the effective implementation of youth-focused projects such as Tiko.
The QA process goes beyond regulatory checks. It is a proactive approach to ensure that adolescents and youth are met with safe, respectful, and youth-friendly services, particularly in areas such as family planning, HIV testing, counseling, and safeguarding. By ensuring that providers are trained to deliver non-judgmental, confidential, and age-appropriate care, PS Kenya helps create environments where young people feel seen, heard, and empowered.
The impact of this initiative is far-reaching. When young people have access to reliable SRH services, they are more likely to make informed health decisions, avoid unintended pregnancies, and seek early treatment for infections. This enables them to stay in school, pursue opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. At the community level, improved adolescent health services build trust in the healthcare system, reduce stigma around SRH topics, and encourage parents, teachers, and local leaders to engage in supportive dialogue.
Nationally, these efforts contribute to Kenya’s broader ambitions of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and fulfilling its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By prioritizing adolescent health, PS Kenya is helping to close the equity gap in health access and ensure that no young person is left behind.
Ultimately, PS Kenya’s work through the Tunza Network is about more than service delivery; it is about investing in the future. A healthier, empowered generation of young people will lead to stronger communities, more resilient families, and a more prosperous Kenya.
Through strategic partnerships, quality-driven programming, and a deep commitment to youth wellbeing, PS Kenya continues to lead the way in creating a health system that works for all, especially for the next generation.
