Give to Gain: Advancing Women’s Empowerment from the Grassroots

Women’s Empowerment from the Grassroots

On International Women’s Day, conversations around women’s empowerment often take center stage. But beyond the panels and discussions, real change continues to take shape in communities, driven by women who are leading, advocating, and creating solutions within their own contexts.

Through the Accelerate Program funded by the Embassy of Denmark, PS Kenya is supporting this shift by investing in women and the community systems that sustain them. The program focuses on strengthening community-based organizations (CBOs), recognizing their critical role in advancing the health, rights, and wellbeing of women and girls at the grassroots level.

This year, that work was reflected at the NTV Kenya International Women’s Day event, held under the theme “Give to Gain.” The theme emphasized a simple but powerful idea: that investing in women through knowledge, opportunity, and support creates lasting benefits for entire communities.

Accelerate supported eight women and girls’ rights holders from the implementing counties to participate in the event. For these women, the space provided more than visibility. It offered access to knowledge, networks, and practical tools that directly strengthen their work back in their communities.

Through targeted masterclasses and sessions, participants engaged in practical, skills-based learning aligned to their roles as community leaders. These included:

  • Her Health, Her Choice – focusing on reproductive health, and overall wellbeing
  • Step into the Boardroom – strengthening leadership, governance, and decision-making capacity
  • Wealth Creation and Economic Empowerment – building financial literacy and economic resilience

These sessions go beyond knowledge-sharing, they directly strengthen the capacity of women leaders to respond to the realities faced within their communities. The focus on health, leadership, and economic empowerment reflects the interconnected challenges that CBOs address daily.

Importantly, the health-focused discussions contribute to the Accelerate Program’s commitment to the three zeros:

  • zero preventable maternal deaths, through improved knowledge on reproductive and maternal health
  • zero unmet need for family planning, by strengthening awareness and informed choice
  • zero gender-based violence and harmful practices, through empowered leadership and community advocacy

By equipping these women with practical knowledge, leadership skills, and confidence, the program is enhancing their ability to educate, mobilize, and support others, ensuring that the impact extends beyond the individuals present to the wider communities they serve.

Strengthening their systems and leadership ensures that interventions are not only relevant but also sustained over time.

The International Women’s Day 2026 theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” reinforces the urgency of translating commitments into real outcomes. For PS Kenya, this means ensuring that women’s rights are not only discussed at national level but realized within communities through strengthened local systems and empowered leaders.

As these women return to their counties, they carry forward new knowledge, expanded networks, and renewed confidence. Through the support of CBOs and the continued investment of the Accelerate Program, this impact will extend to the communities they serve building a foundation for sustained, community-driven change.
