In the heart of Morukarisa Village, tucked within the rugged, hilly terrain of Teso South, lives Omar Osoma, a determined and passionate Community Health Promoter (CHP). As a member of the Morukarisa Community Health Unit (CHU), Omar has made it his mission to bring healthcare closer to his people. With specialized training in Community Case Management of Malaria (CCMM) and unwavering support from PS Kenya, Omar is transforming health outcomes, one household at a time.
Omar’s journey as a CHP began with little more than a deep desire to serve. But the task was far from easy. Morukarisa’s steep hills and poorly developed road networks made it extremely difficult for him to reach households, especially during the rainy season when footpaths became impassable. Without a motorcycle or bicycle, Omar often trekked for hours under the hot sun or through the mud, just to reach a sick child or conduct a follow-up visit.
Beyond physical barriers, Omar also faced limitations in knowledge and resources. Though deeply committed, he initially lacked formal training on how to diagnose and manage common childhood illnesses like malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia. As a result, many cases escalated unnecessarily, and families particularly those without the means to travel, were left feeling helpless.
In 2023, Omar’s journey took a pivotal turn. He was among several CHPs selected for refresher training under PS Kenya’s Community Case Management of Malaria (CCMM) initiative. For Omar, the training was more than an opportunity; it was a lifeline. He learned how to recognize and treat uncomplicated malaria, administer timely medication, and educate families on prevention practices.
Equipped with diagnostic kits, job aids, and data reporting tools, Omar was finally able to deliver quality care. PS Kenya also ensured consistent monthly support, supervision and mentorship, facilitated by his Community Health Assistant (CHA). These check-ins built Omar’s confidence and gave him a sense of professional belonging. Regular peer-review meetings with other CHPs provide a platform to share challenges, learn from others, and find collective solutions.
Today, despite the unforgiving terrain, Omar walks with purpose. His visits are no longer routine; they are life-saving interventions. Mothers now seek him out as the first point of contact when a child shows signs of illness. He has successfully treated many cases of uncomplicated malaria, made timely referrals for severe conditions, and promoted hygiene and preventive practices across households.
Omar says, “Even though the hills are steep and the paths are rough, I keep going. What keeps me going is knowing I can save a child’s life. The training and support from PS Kenya gave me that ability. Now I do my work with pride.”
Omar’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of community-based health interventions. With the right training, tools, and continued support, Community Health Promoters like Omar are delivering essential care where it’s needed most, deep in the hills of Morukarisa and far beyond.
